Fingers, 2019

Hidde van Seggelen, Hamburg

The paintings are made using several brightly pigmented transparent glazes applied over abraded aluminium grounds. Illuminated in one way they may appear to be uniform dark monochromes or inactive screens; in another light the works come to life, with images and incidental marks leaping into focus from beneath the paint.

The appearance of the works can alter dramatically depending on the position of the sun, the passage of clouds, or the movement of the viewer in the space. Viewing is an ongoing process. As such, the work is never resolved but, rather, always newly unfolding, throwing into relief the inadequacy of photographic documentation.
