Paintings and other Things: the other Things, 2010

Hidde van Seggelen Gallery, London

An alkyd and epoxy resin on mild steel painting (195 x 120 cm), nine gelatin silver photographs (195 x 120 cm), and an abraded stainless steel ball painted with alkyd and epoxy resin (15 cm Ø).

The photographs were made by reflecting torch-light from the glossy surface of the painting directly onto photographic paper; each photograph is a beautifully clear trace of the painting's tiny blemishes and barely perceptible surface relief. As such, the photographs give some stability to the appearance of a painting that typically varies greatly depending on the light, although they also rather confuse it.

A small book of related but discrete images, OTHER THINGS, was published to coincide with the exhibition, designed and with an odd and at times charming lump of related prose by Ed Atkins.

The painting, the ball, and five of the photographs were subsequently presented in an exhibition in Museum Beelden aan Zee, NL, some images of which follow below.
