Paintings and other Things: the other Things, 2010

Hidde van Seggelen Gallery, London

A painting, alkyd and epoxy resin on mild steel (195 x 120 cm).

Nine gelatin silver photographs (195 x 120 cm).

A ball, alkyd and epoxy resin on stainless steel (15 cm Ø).

The photographs are made by reflecting torchlight from the painting's glossy surface directly onto photographic paper. Each photograph is a beautifully clear trace of the painting's tiny blemishes, inperceptible surface relief and bewildered layers. The painting's appearance varies greatly depending on the light; the photographs give it some stability, whilst confusing it. The ball rolled out of the painting a few days into making it.

A small book of related but discrete images, OTHER THINGS, was published to coincide with the exhibition, designed and with odd related prose by Ed Atkins.

The painting, the ball, and five of the photographs were subsequently presented in a solo exhibition in the Dutch museum Beelden aan Zee, for images of which, click here.
